Know the Difference Between Names and Phrases throughout Periods in History

Image
Know the difference between names and phrases   When writing a novel or any story, one has to ensure that they know and understand the differences between names and phrases being used throughout history. For example, say you’re writing a book about pirates but you fail to call a known ship’s captain as a privateer and instead called him a pirate. There is a huge difference between the two words and the meaning of one word is usually honorable while the other is criminal. But then again, a privateer could be a criminal even though they have a commission by a lord, King or Queen to plunder other ships cargo under the name of said royalty. For example, Admiral Francis Drake although having a commission from Queen Elizabeth I in 1572 was a privateer had plundered various Spanish settlements throughout the Americas for his own personal fortune. It is widely known that many privateers stepped over the line from their commission and were known to attack other vessels that didn’t belon

Plot Synopsis

Image
Plot Synopsis   There are two types of plot synopsis, one that is short and sweet that wets the whistle of a reader to buy your book, and then a lengthier synopsis that entices a publisher to want to publish your book. The lengthy one is part of your book proposal that also includes genre, characters of note, the setting, the style and so on. Here is an example of a short and sweet synopsis for one of my books, The Last Wish. On the brink of losing her job and facing financial ruin things can’t get any worse in Kendra Doyle’s life, until she learns that her grandfather has died. Will his last wish solve her problems or add to them? In the above synopsis I introduced the main character, what her main plot point is and that her grandfather is a key player in the outcome of the story, even though he has died. His last wish is for her to fulfill this last wish and maybe it will help solve her financial problems. (I will go over the proposal aspect of producing a synopsis when

Proper Research

Proper Research So, you have an idea to write a book. It doesn’t matter what type of book you plan to write, well except science fiction about some outer space galaxy that hasn’t been named yet, you will have to do some form of research to ensure you have all the facts correctly. Let’s say you’re planning to write a book that involves one of the previous wars, or maybe politics, a government agency, law enforcement, a specific murder, or even royalty in some period of time, you have to make sure you do proper research to ensure you have details right, historical timeline correct and most importantly wording and language correct. The last thing you want to do is write a 150-word novel only to realize in the editing phase that you were using a modern phrase that wasn’t even invented yet in the 1700s. How embarrassing would that be to your fans. In addition, while conducting your research you might come upon information that would be a great filler in a chapter. One thing I love to includ

Create your character Biographies

Image
Create your character Biographies Outside of fundamental outlining a novel, to give you’re a good foundation of your story, the best part of writing any story to this author, is creating good Eye-catching characters back story that the reader can fall in love with. For example, Stuart Woods characters in his Stone Barrington Series are my favorite set of characters, then it’s J. A. Jance characters in her Beaumont series, oh and let’s not forget David Baldacci’s Camel Club series characters.   Each author designed their characters to be engaging, compelling and who have issues to resolve even though their dealing with a murder, or national security issues to solve. It’s that personal issue that attaches these characters to the reader. Never forget that. The compelling story is what makes the reader love your character. The reader must fall in love with them to the point where they are routing for them to succeed. No matter what type of writer you are, your characters you create ar
